The EMFLT sponsored their annual river clean project on Friday June 19, 2009. I hope you knew about the event and had an opportunity to attend. We post the dates on our web site as soon as it is determined.
We had 60+ attend including the Navy, Dusty’s, Boy Scouts, EMFLT board members and other conservation minded individuals. The day was hot and the river low, however I think it was a wonderful day on the river.
Our secondary goal is to pick up the litter that has ended up in the water way through irresponsible use of the river and you can see by the pictures the amount of trash that was collected. The significance in this pile was that the same sections we floated this day was also floated by Mississippi Power Company and their employees to remove litter just three weeks prior to our event. That shows the magnitude of abuse of some of those that use the river.
Our primary goal in our cleanup project is to educate those actually picking up other’s discarded trash to how quickly it accumulates. These young people now have a new understanding of the effects of littering. It is our hope they become a crusader among their peer groups to promote a cleaner environment.
Boyette’s fish camp provided a wonderful fish dinner for all the hungry participants. They have a great restaurant so if you are not familiar with them or have not been in a while, please check them out, you will not be disappointed.
The wooden information sign in the photo is one of four we had built and placed at Tatum landing, Boyettes Bridge, Point Landing and Stuckey’s bridge landing. They are intended to provide information about the river as well as encourage the users to be good stewards of the river.
Remember, most of the access points to the Chunky River are on private land and it is only through the generosity of the land owner that we are allowed to use them. Lets all do our part not to abuse the privilege.
Thanks again to all those who helped in this successful project. Please watch our website for upcoming projects and events.
